Larkin & Lacey

The AFL-CIO was developed in 1955. It is a combo of two opposing labor organizations—the Congress of Industrial Organizations and the American Federation of Labor. In the 2000s, opposing views lead some labor unions to break off from the AFL-CIO to start a labor rights organization called Change to Win.

Labor organizations have been a real godsend when it comes to regulation being placed on employers because they were actively involved in politics that lead to such regulations. However, labor organizations were also involved in pushing for wars to happen.

The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund, brilliantly crafted by Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey is a one-of-a -kind organization that caters to the needs of DREAMers and people who cross the border and stay here illegally.

However, Lacey and Larkin see this as an issue of human rights and ethics. They see the immigrants who are coming here as beautiful people in pursuit of better lives for themselves, not “illegal” aliens from Mars.

Plan International is an organization that saw its founding more than 80 years ago. Its founders were a journalist from Britain named John Langdon-Davies, and a refugee worker by the name of Eric Muggeridge. Plan International was founded in 1939 to aide children who suffered from the Spanish Civil War. Langdon-Davies came up with the idea of sponsors sponsoring misfortunate children. Today, Plan International works for children's rights and quality of living in 70 countries. Their plan is to affect the lives of at least 100 million girls within the next five years. They have a number of campaigns, including Because I Am A Girl, which emphasizes October 11th—the International Day of the Girl.

Plan International also provides people with opportunities to sponsor children in other parts of the world. Contributions as a sponsor are tax deductible, and go toward projects in the communities that sponsored children live in.

NAMBLA is a far cry from the organizations mentioned above, due to the questionable nature of its plight. What is NAMBLA? NAMBLA stands for North American Man Boy Love Association. The name says it all.

Founded as a support group in 1979 for men who desired to have romantic and sexual relationships with boys and underage adolescents, it consists of very, very few members. The people who do work for the organization are volunteers, and NAMBLA is not as well endowed with money as other civil rights organizations.

Of course, there is a very, very, very, very gray area between what is considered to be predation and victimization and what is considered to be consensual and truly wholesome—especially when you are talking about legal adults having sexual and romantic relationships with minors. People grow and come unto awareness about certain things at different ages.

There is a kernel of truth to what NAMBLA has to say—maybe not when it comes to young, underdeveloped kids, but perhaps when it comes to developed adolescents who are making their own decisions and are pretty aware of what they are doing.
